Anyone that says that there is no more great music to be heard should have been with me last night. The Rockwood Music Hall was packed and just when you wondered if it could get any more crowded, it did. In fact, the over flow crowd extended well out onto Allen Street. I have never been to the Rockwood when the crowd outside that seemed to number in the hundreds was so tightly pressed against the glass just trying to catch a glimpse of the performer on stage.
I had heard a lot of great thing about the man with the guitar and from some very reliable sources so I was prepared at the very least for a very entertaining evening. What the crowd and I got was much more than any of us bargained for. From the moment Gary Clark Jr. hit the stage he and his music took us all to a whole new place. The first notes on his guitar silenced the crowd, who to this point were jostling for position and chatting as loud as they could, and everyone turned their full attention to the stage. For the next hour and a half Gary took everyone in the room on a magical musical journey.
Had he just been able to play the guitar in a style all his own that might have been enough but in a voice that was often reminiscent of a singer named Marvin he had everyone, particularly the ladies, hanging on every word. By the reaction of the crowd and even some iconic musicians in attendance Gary’s future looks extremely bright. It has been said that he is ‘the future of Texas Blues’, but even a state as big as Texas won’t be able to contain a talent this large.
